HOW DOES IT WORK?

Kinesiology tape can be used in a multitude of ways; from kinesiology taping methods to providing sensory support. Athletes all over the world are using kinesiology tape and feeling the results, however the evidential science behind the kinesiology taping methodology is somewhat lacking, so until it catches up hear the experts thoughts ....

Although kinesiology taping has been used by millions of people worldwide, its popularity has been gained through its clinical effectiveness at reducing pain and changing athletic function rather than hard scientific evidence. Several theories exist as to how kinesiology tape works however none have proved conclusive.

3 ways Kinesiology Tape Works:

  • Reduce pressure on painful areas - kinesiology tape can be applied to relieve the tension often associated with weakened or inflamed muscles and tendons. It can help by reducing the pain caused by the overload and be helpful for engaging actively in rehab.

  • Improve your ability to move - depending how the tape is applied it is thought to activate stretch receptors in the soft tissue which feedback to our higher brain centres. This positively influences the control of muscle tension by activating muscle spindles. This in turn improves our ability to flex and respond to the stresses and strains of increased activity, and improves our muscular endurance.

  • Promote blood flow and lymphatic drainage - when applied to the skin with stretch the tape naturally wants to recoil. As a result, it lifts the skin and fascia to allow blood and lymph flow to increase which may be beneficial in the recovery of soft tissue injuries.

4. WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?

  • kinesiology tape can be worn from children to the elderly

  • Designed for sport the adhesion is second to none and can be removed without discomfort and minimal residue

  • Most glue is hypoallergenic and latex free (although I would always recommend a test patch first)

Food for Thought

  • KINESIOLOGY TAPE isn’t a miracle cure & should always be used alongside other treatments

  • The skill is in the application. To get maximum benefit the right combination of tape and tissue stretch is vital

  • Often the point of pain isn't the root of the cause and that’s why you should always get assessed first.
